Paris:
When most people think of ways to keep themselves fit, they think of going to the gym, playing a sport or signing up for a training program. However perplexing as it may be, these activities most often include exercising with many people; from which introverts, like myself, tend to shy away. Despite the enormous amount of support offered in group training, not just from trainers, but from friends as well; it's pretty easy to feel self conscious and judged while indulging or participating in them. The wandering eyes and sly strangers who pass unwanted comments and taunts, seem to give me a feeling of uneasiness.
From the very beginning, engaging in sports has been my forte. But, I will not hesitate to admit that drills seem to make me tense and nervous, especially with all the attention. As most children tend to find alternate ways of protecting their self interest, I too try and stay in the middle of the line, hoping to distract the attention off me. In my mind, I perhaps speculate over their thoughts and misinterpret their opinions about my skills(if they are worth being referred to as 'skills'). Being an ardent lover of sports, it becomes strenuous to focus on the task at hand; while the mind conjectures over peoples' judgement.
If you tend to shy away from training in the gym, or participating in a team sport, there are plenty of ways to exercise. Here are some quick tips for an introvert trying to find the perfect way of working out:
1. Find a location or space you feel comfortable in
Being uncomfortable about an environment is probably the reason you give up easily. Most of the time, I don't workout because I cannot comply with the space. If I was alone or in my yard, I'd be more enthusiastic and energetic. While the space or area does not have to be an entire room or park, make sure you don't end up bumping into walls or items. Ensure that you workout in a distraction free zone, with nothing to tempt you out of your workout such as food, or a comfy bed.
2. Be prepared with necessary materials
Grab a bottle of water or Gatorade to stay hydrated, since working out makes you thirsty. Wear appropriate clothing such as sneakers, athletic shorts or leggings, and probably a dry-fit shirt. Again, do NOT wear lose clothing, since they are in no way the right clothes for a workout. Even though lose clothing looks fashionable, they may be a hassle while working out, owing to the interference they have with body movements.
4. Decide if you want to workout with a small group of friends
Working out in a gym full of strangers can be less intimidating if you have a group of friends with you. This option may not be the best route for some introverts, but choosing a small group of friends can also add an environment of support. Even though exercising alone can be just as effective those who are more inclined to slack when exercising alone should consider working out with supportive friends. Not only will you have fun being with your friends, but they will also help provide the dependability you need to complete the workout.
